In the northern hemisphere, the first day of spring was Friday, March 20. In Ayurveda, yoga’s sister science, we are in a sacred transition. We are moving away from the Vata season—the energy of air, movement, and the cold wind that can leave us feeling scattered or ungrounded—and stepping into the Kapha season, the energy of the earth and spring rains.
Kapha is the cold, moist, heavy, and sluggish energy governed by the earth and water elements – the dense, wet soil that holds the seed. Kapha imbalances can occur anytime but are more common during this season. Excessive kapha can lead to fatigue or brain fog, feelings of heaviness or lethargy, and sluggish digestion.
