Find the Perfect Yoga Class for You

Starting a yoga journey is exciting! You’re ready to embrace wellness, find balance, and grow personally. But with so many options available, how do you find the perfect fit? Keep reading to explore what style of yoga suits your needs, pace, and goals.

Understanding Different Yoga Practices

Yoga is not one-size-fits-all. There are many styles, each with its own vibe, pace, and focus. Knowing these can help you pick a class that feels just right.

  • Vinyasa Yoga: If you like movement and flow, this style links breath with dynamic poses. It’s energizing and creative.

  • Iyengar Yoga: This style emphasizes precision and uses props such as blocks and straps. It’s great for those who want to improve posture and flexibility.

  • Ashtanga Yoga: A rigorous style with a set sequence of poses, ideal if you want a challenging, disciplined practice.

  • Hot Yoga (formerly Bikram Yoga): This intense and detoxifying style is practiced in a heated room and includes a fixed sequence of 26 poses.

  • Yin Yoga: This gentle style of yoga involves holding stretches for three to five minutes each. It's great for complementing your other activities as it works with your connective tissues to keep you mobile and maintain your range of motion.

  • Restorative Yoga: Need deep relaxation? This style uses props to support the body in restful poses, perfect for stress relief.

Each style provides unique benefits. Consider what you want from your practice—energy, relaxation, strength, or flexibility—and let that guide your decision. You might practice different styles throughout the week depending on what you need on a particular day.

How to Choose the Right Yoga Style for You

Choosing the right yoga style for you involves matching your personality, fitness level, and goals. The best style for you may change over time. Here’s how to narrow it down:

  • Assess Your Fitness Level

Are you new to exercise or already active? Beginners might prefer Yin or Restorative yoga. Vinyasa or Ashtanga could be exciting if you want a workout.

  • Consider Your Goals

Looking to build strength? Vinyasa or Ashtanga are great.

Want to reduce stress? Try Restorative.

Interested in building flexibility and mobility? Yin is your go-to.

Need better posture? Iyengar is your friend.

  • Think About Your Schedule

Some classes are fast-paced and intense, others are slow and calming. Pick what fits your energy and time availability.

  • Try Different Classes

Don’t hesitate to sample a few styles. Many studios offer drop-in classes or trial passes. This hands-on experience is the best way to find your match.

  • Find an Instructor who Resonates with You

A good teacher makes all the difference. Look for someone who encourages you, offers modifications, and creates a welcoming space.

What is Yoga to Thrive?

In January 2023, while reflecting on my intentions and goals for the year, authenticity kept coming to mind. I wondered, "How can I show up as my true self in my personal and business interactions?"

By then, I had been teaching yoga for over ten years and leading yoga retreats for eight. During this time, I had trained in multiple styles of yoga, taught more than 2,000 classes, and practiced with teachers from various lineages. I experienced firsthand how yoga can transform a person. As a triathlete, I engaged in several other fitness modalities such as Pilates, strength training, and barre – you name it!

When reflecting on the importance of being authentic and true to both my needs from yoga in my mid-40s and feedback I received from my students, I contemplated an idea – perhaps it was time to create a style of yoga specifically for Firefly Community. Considering Firefly's motto of Ignite, Thrive, Shine, I decided Yoga to Thrive would be a fitting title.

I personally experienced how my yoga practice had to evolve as I recovered from a partial knee replacement and a shoulder injury. Yoga to Thrive classes are designed to keep you mobile and agile so you can age gracefully, maintain your range of motion, and remain active and injury-free. I aimed to create yoga classes that help people increase body awareness and improve their overall well-being by engaging in a practice that combines intentional movements with strength-building and balance.

Yoga to Thrive combines multiple styles of yoga to create a well-rounded practice appropriate for all levels and without requiring any experience. In addition to traditional vinyasa, yin, and Self Awakening Yoga poses, it integrates some strengthening exercises as well.

Yoga to Thrive has four guiding principles:

  1. Body Awareness: Throughout class, you’re encouraged to observe and notice sensations to access the wisdom of your body. By using the “as-is” principle, accept yourself and your experiences in the moment and remain inquisitive without judgment.

  2. Mobility and Flexibility: Mobility is essential for preventing stiffness and injury. Regular stretching and myofascial release can enhance flexibility and improve movement patterns, allowing you to maintain your range of motion. In Yoga to Thrive, we move in all planes, work with our connective tissues such as fascia, ligaments, and tendons, bring awareness to areas of tightness or stickiness, and recognize asymmetries in the body.

  3. Strength: Muscle mass naturally declines with age, but resistance training helps sustain strength, bone density, and joint stability. Strength training increases muscular strength and endurance, two of the five components of health-related fitness. Yoga to Thrive classes incorporate movements designed to strengthen the muscles and encourage practitioners to pay attention to whether certain muscles struggle to engage or are unable to disengage or relax. There’s a saying that flexibility without strength leads to fragility, while strength without flexibility leads to rigidity. The combination of strength and flexibility helps us achieve stability and our most efficient alignment, so we can move with ease.

  4. Balance: Developing balance aids in functional movement and helps us avoid injury by strengthening stabilizer muscles and cultivating proprioception (a sense of your location in space). When you maintain balance, you are better equipped to catch yourself if you trip or slip, and you can sustain independence by being able to move well.
