A Deeper Dive into Saturated Fats

In my recent blog post reviewing the updated Dietary Guidelines for Americans, I noted aspects that were generally helpful for most people's health, but I also raised red flags about parts that concerned me, especially as a heart disease survivor who’s lived through the downstream effects of plaque buildup – it was plaque that ruptured and caused the blood clot in my coronary artery. 


The recommendations to eat more whole foods and fewer highly processed foods, limit added sugar, and eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables per day are positive.

What raised the biggest concern for me was the part encouraging people to eat meat and consume full-fat dairy, even though these products are high in saturated fat.


Saturated fat has been making a comeback, not only in the dietary guidelines but also on social media and in the news. But what does the science actually say?
